Richard is the minority leader of the Indiana Senate since 1996. He is
married to Ashira and has five adult children Bridget, Angela, Jennifer,
Victoria and Richard. He graduated from Vincennes University in 1989 with
an Associate Degree in Behavior Science. He is a farmer and owner of
Oxbow Farms, was the Crawford County Auditor from 1982 – 1986 and is
a
Past President and Board Chairman of E & S Distributors Co., Inc.
Civic and professional memberships include Chairman FFA Advisory Committee Crawford County, Farm Bureau, Crawford County Chamber of Commerce, Vincennes University Jasper Center Foundation, Milltown Lions Club and Board of Directors Hoosier Hills P.A.C.T. Community Corrections Council and Violent Crimes Victims Task Force. He is a past president of the Crawford County 4-H Council and a past member of the Ramsey Lions Club, the Board of Directors Hoosier Falls Private Industry council, the Board of Directors, Hoosier Uplands Area Agency for the Aging, the Board of Directors Area 15 Regional Planning Commission, the Board of Directors Crawford County Cattlemen Association, the Board of Directors Harrison, Crawford Pork Producers, the Board of Directors Southern Hills Community Mental Health Council, and the Advisory Board, Southwest Region, Governor’s Commission for a Drug Free Indiana.
Awards presented to Richard include Vincennes University Scholastic Award – Summa Cum Laude, Honorary Doctor of Public Service Award – Vincennes University, Honorary Member of Phi Theta Kappa – International Honor Society, Outstanding Leadership Award – The 104 Aluminum, Brick & Glassworks International Union, Friend of 4-H Award, Crawford County Grassland Farmer Award, Indiana Horse Council – Friend of the Equine Industry Award, Indiana Farm Bureau – award of Outstanding Services to Agriculture & Citizens of Indiana, Public Service Award – Todd Dickey Medical Center, Indiana University Southeast – Support and Service Award, Southern Hills Counseling Center – Service Award, appreciation awards from Perry County Arts Council, the American Heart Association, the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Association, Legislator of the Year Award 2002 from the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, Small Business Champion Award 2002 from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Indiana Award for Excellence from the United Mine Workers of America 2002.
Hobbies include fishing, gardening and painting.
